Hi, I’m Ailsa Green and this is Rosie Luckraft and together we make up the library team for Hawker School Community Library. Also working alongside us is Steve Green,the IT technician for school. You will often see him helping out in the library.

We have a library blog called Caught Between the Covers.

I use the phrase Caught Between the Covers because I believe reading is so important for all. I want to catch children reading, i.e., caught between the covers of a book. The following article gives reasons why reading is so important, not just for children, but for all of us.

Ailsa is the Teacher/Librarian and Rosie is the Community Library Assistant. Together, we manage the running of Hawker School Community Library. A school community library is a joint use library, meaning that it is open to both the public and the school (though this changes at times with the issues surrounding COVID!).

Scholastic Book Fair will be held at Hawker Area School from 9-11th August 2022 - Week 3, Term 3 This date coincides with the school Open Night to be held on August 11. More information will come out closer to this date.

Student Attendance

Students receive points (in dollar amount) that matches their school attendance. At the end of each term, they are presented with an attendance award. This provides them with a voucher they can use to purchase books and other items from Scholastic Book Club or Book Fair. They have until the end of Term3 2022 to use their vouchers.

Library

April 1988 saw the school Library become available to the public when it was opened by the Premier John Bannon as the Hawker School Community Library. This facilitated making resources more available for the public, providing a more personal service and enabling students and public to access a wider choice of books and a variety of resources. All students are encouraged to borrow frequently from our community school library. Students are encouraged to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge and the National Simultaneous Story time each year.

Our Library is a School Community Library and is open to the community during and after school hours. The library contains a wide selection of children’s and adult’s non-fiction and fiction titles and we encourage parents to come to the library to choose books with their children and for themselves. Free public Internet is available. The public can access the Internet through the Library wireless connection. Our Library staff will happily assist.

Start of Term Two

I will be away in the first two weeks of next term on Long Service Leave. During this time Jan Love, who filled in for me last year will be acting Principal and can be contacted at school on 86484003. I can also report that at the last Governing Council meeting at the end of the term to special days were approved:

Monday May 27^th – a Whole School Closure day for the Hawker Races Weekend. No staff present at school on this day.
Friday June 7^th – a pupil free day as part of a Portfolio Pupil Free Day including the Far North Partnership. Staff will be engaging in Professional Learning on the ‘Areas of Impact’ strategy for public education.

Looking forward to seeing everyone when I get back.

Parent Student Teacher Interviews and Mission Australia Visi...

On Tuesday April 9^th and Wednesday April 10^th (Week 11 of the Term) the school will be holding it’s Parent Student Teacher Interview nights. These interviews will be an opportunity for Parents and Students to get feedback from their teachers (in all subject areas Primary and Secondary) on their progress so far this year. These interviews will replace our term one written secondary reports and primary progress checks which have been used for this purpose in recent years. I encourage all parents to take the opportunity to book interviews with all teachers when the Session Keeper portal opens up on Tuesday April 2nd at 9am for interview bookings.The Session Keeper portal can be accessed through the following address: https://hawkeras.schoolzineplus.com/Parent Student Teacher Interviews Term 1 2024

Interview timeslots will run for 15 minutes and run from 3.30pm until 6pm each night.

The meetings will provide the following:

A chance for parents and students to get an idea of how students are progressing so far, in terms of a possible AC grade at the moment. However this would be simply a statement about progress at this point of the semester and should not be taken as a prediction.
Discussion and sharing of student work, areas for further improvement, possible tasks and activities that can also be done at home.
The opportunity for parents, students and teachers to ask questions. The school and home environments are part of a students learning and this is an opportunity to get some clarity here.

Once bookings are made on Session Keeper teachers will be aware of these. If it is not possible to fit an interview in teachers can also be available at other times by appointment through the front office or their school email. Some teachers will be available for conversations on both days, however other teachers will be available as follows:

Amanda Hilder – Tuesday April 9^th
Emily Fels – Wednesday April 10th
Travis McDonald – Wednesday April 10^th
Hayley Brown – Wednesday April 10th

Mission Australia Bookings:

Representatives from Mission Australia/NDIS will also be coming on these days to address any inquiries you may have regarding NDIS. Topics for discussion encompass NDIS access and eligibility, comprehension and utilisation of your NDIS plan, navigating the portal, effectively managing supports and budgets within your plan, and methods for finding and engaging providers. Additionally, parents and community members have the opportunity to have a chat with the Community Engagement Facilitator to discuss recognised community gaps such as employment opportunities, inclusive sporting activities, and available services. These bookings are open to all parents to consider attending.

With the isolation of Hawker and the accompanying issues of difficulties accessing services this offers parents the chance to make a booking to discuss any support issues. Mission Australia can be booked from 2pm onwards each day, running through to 6pm.

Swimming Carnival Preperations 2024

Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Tomorrow’s swimming carnival will commence at 11am at the Hawker Community Swimming pool.

Parents please make sure that students are organised with the following:

· A hat and a shirt to put on between events to be sunsmart.

· Sunblock applied before coming to school.

· A waterbottle, for hygiene given our recent illnesses at school.

· Bathers and towels.

· Lunch and snacks.

· Money for the P&F Barbecue if allowed.
